Spellings
In year 1/2 we have weekly spellings to learn. We send spellings home on a sheet each Friday. These are to be practised at home and children will be tested on their spellings the following Friday. These spellings match the phonics sounds and words we have been teaching each week in school. There is a list of words, then some additional tricky words for your child to learn.
There are lots of ways to practise:
- write the words on post it notes and dot them around the house for your child to read throughout the week. Reading each word regularly will help them to spell each word.
- Encourage your child to spot the sounds in the words ( we call these digraphs and trigraphs), then to cover the word and try to write it using the sounds identified.
- See if your child can write the spelling word in a sentence, then check to see if they have spelt it correctly using the sheet to help them.
- Practise often and in short bursts, rather than trying to learn them all at once.
Have fun!
