Phonics
Reception children are working so hard with their phonics!
We are already beginning to recognise some of the letter sounds and match them with objects. As well as our daily writing job we also practice our writing in our handwriting books, learning where to start our letters and thinking about whether they are astronaut ascenders (tall letters such as d/h) or digger descenders (letters that go below the line such as g/f).
If your child is writing at home, please use the formation phrases, found in your child's reading record, or on the document below.
These will help your child become a handwriting superstar!
There are some words that we cannot sound out phonetically and just need to be memorised. These are referred to as 'tricky words'. Learning these helps children become fluent readers and confident writers.
Why not play I-Spy using some tricky word post it notes, encouraging your child to write the words for you to hide, then when you tell them the word, they have to read the post it's to find the right one.
