Children at St George’s learn French in Key Stage 2 in line with the one of the languages offered at the local high school. For the Autumn 2019 and Spring 2020 terms, children in Year 4/5 and Year 5/6 have been taught by a specialist French teacher each week. Our plan was for Year 3 to begin their basic French studies in the Summer term 2020.
Our French teacher planned her French lessons as a 2-3 year continuous course for pupils in KS2. We understand that regular repetition is essential in order for successful language learning through songs, games, cultural references and grammar learning. Each learning objective may take place over a number of lessons with regular opportunities to revisit past learnt language. Work is differentiated to suit different abilities and further activities are built in for pupils ready to go ahead and extend their language skills.
We currently have 2 teachers learning French to prepare them for teaching Key Stage 2 during the academic year 2020 – 2021. They are loving their course!
