Early Years Foundation Stage

Nursery News

Our Nursery has been part of a county initiative for Nurseries and I am pleased to report that our Nursery achieved from the Local Authority, the highest grade for all areas.  This is fantastic and proves that St. George's Nursery provides a quality education within a stimulating environment.

Well done to all Nursery staff.

The Early Years Foundation Stage offers a broad and balanced curriculum for 3 to 5 year olds and it is our intention for them to be successful and happy whilst in school.

Our staff are caring and committed to every child realising his/her potential.

In our last Ofsted Inspection (November 2008) it was noted that, 'The Early Years Foundation Stage is a caring, safe and friendly environment'.  Ofsted also went on to say, 'The activities promote all aspects of learning and development, with a good balance of taught activites and learning through play.  They are encouraged to be independent and to take responsibility for their work and play, which makes them proud'.

Newsletter May 2010

Dear Parents/Carers

As we are settling back into the new term we are now ready to start more structured activities and there are a few things coming up which I would like to tell you about.  We are beginning our topic about GROWING which will begin by looking at soil so please make sure the children are not wearing their best clothes as they may get dirty!  We will then look at seeds and do some planting.  On Monday 17th May I am organizing a trip to look at the allotments and the things that grow there.  This will be followed up with a trip to the shops on Tuesday 25th May to see what fruit and vegetables we can buy there.  For both of these trips we will need adults to accompany us so if you are able to help with either or both of these we would be very grateful.

On Wednesday 9th June we will have a visit from the Oral Health nurse who is coming to talk to the children but would also like to speak to parents as well at 11.50 a.m.  It is New Mills Carnival on Saturday 12th June and nursery children are welcome to join in but will have to be accompanied by an adult.  I am in the process of arranging our nursery trip which will be on Tuesday 20th July and am awaiting prices for the coach.  The cost of the coach/length of the journey/suitable facilities at the destination means that we are limited in finding appropriate places to go.  I have looked at Matlock Farm Park and also Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock but would like feedback from yourselves as to which you would prefer, since children will have to be accompanied and I am aware that the cost of trips is expensive.  Please indicate which you would prefer on the slip below.

Thank you

Carole Townsend

Spring Term 2010

Nursery information for parents

Happy New Year to everyone and welcome back to nursery.  You should have received a letter from Mr Thomas which explained why we had to be closed last week and thanking parents for their patience and understanding about this.  If we have any more bad weather and you are not sure whether we are open or not, High Peak Radio has details of all local schools which are closed.

Now we are ready to get started on our topics for this term, and the children will be learning about the world around them and progressing towards the “Early Learning Goals” (which they should achieve by the end of Reception Class) through activities based on the following themes:

Winter – We will talk about frost and snow; discuss wildlife and what we can do to look after birds and wild animals; make a bird feeder to take home; talk about how to keep warm and make soup for snack, peeling vegetables and comparing the ingredients before and after they are cooked; compare clothes for hot and cold weather and sort them, also match gloves and mittens that are the same; pretend to go on a journey to the North Pole using compasses and talk about what we would see there.

Shopping – Our role play area will be turned into different shops; we will look at books about shopping and make labels for our shelves; we will weigh, measure, count out money as we buy and sell things in the shops; talk about the different jobs that people do and act these out; we will go on a visit to a shop and buy things for snack.

Materials – We will look at different objects and what they are made from; look at different materials and choose which we like best, and which ones are best for different jobs (e.g. waterproof); talk about the properties of different materials and use new words to describe them; look at different textures and make collages from different media.

Life-cycles – We will talk about how to care for baby animals; learn names of adults and their young; look at pictures of different stages of life-cycles and put them in order; talk about growth and how size and shape changes; discuss what animals like to eat.

In addition we will have a whole school open day on 10th February and a Lazy Town Party in aid of Sport Relief on 19th March.  The Friday PE sessions will start soon so please ensure that your child has some pumps at nursery (with their names in).   Thank you for bringing in your child’s snack money every Monday morning (£1 per week).  The children are able to borrow a Nursery Library book every week.  Please can these be returned by Monday, our Library day so that they can choose a new one.

Please could you bring your child to nursery with suitable clothes for playing outside as we go out whatever the weather.  If clean/dry clothes are borrowed from nursery please can you return them as soon as possible as we only have a limited supply.  If you can contribute any resources that we could use in our role play areas we would be very grateful.  Also if any parent/grandparent/friend would be interested in coming in to nursery to help out we would love to have them!  Please ask for further information.

Please tell us if someone else will be collecting your child at 12.00 mid-day.

Many thanks,

Newsletter - November 2009

Dear Parents,

Just a quick note about events that are coming up this term.  On Friday for Children in Need we are having a Fancy Dress morning, so children (and staff!) can come in any outfit they like.  We shall be selling Pudsey Bear stickers and having a raffle to raise money for Children in Need, and we hope you will support us in this.

The following Friday (November 27th) is a non-uniform day in aid of the Chocolate Tombola for the PTA Christmas Fair (December 4th from 3 p.m. onwards).  This means that if you wish to come in your normal clothes you may do so as long as you donate a chocolate item for the tombola.

The school Christmas concert will be held on two afternoons – Tuesday 8th and Thursday 10th December.  The nursery children do participate in this and some children will be spiders, others will be nativity characters.  All children will take part unless you would prefer them not to.  More details will follow nearer the time, but it is likely that nursery will run as normal in the morning and then children are asked to return to school in the afternoon for the concert.

Our nursery party will be held on Wednesday 16th December and we ask parents to contribute food for this – again, more details will follow nearer the time.

As you can see there is a lot to fit in before Christmas, and the hall will not be available for us to use on Fridays for PE until the New Year.  However, I would still like to have a movement session of some description within nursery so please could you ensure that your child has a pair of named PE pumps available for use on Fridays (they will also need them for the concert).

A final note – we play out in all weathers so please make sure your child has warm clothing including a coat.  We would be grateful for any outdoor clothes that you don’t need, including wellies so that children can use them if it is very wet. IF YOU BORROW CLOTHING FROM NURSERY PLEASE RETURN IT AS WE ARE VERY SHORT OF TROUSERS AND SOCKS IN PARTICULAR.

Thank you

Carole Townsend

 Autumn Term 2009

Nursery information for parents

Welcome back to nursery after the Summer holiday.  This term the children will be learning about the world around them and progressing towards the “Early Learning Goals” (which they should achieve by the end of Reception Class) through activities based on the following themes:

  • Settling in: We will get to know the new children and talk about what they like to play with, talk about nursery routines, how to share toys and be friends with everyone.
  • All about me, my family and friends: We will talk about skin, hair and eye colour and that everyone is different, make faces and handprints for our ‘Welcome to Nursery’ display, talk about our bodies and what we can do, exercise and what happens when we run around, talk about the people who live in our house and draw pictures.
  • Food and Harvest: We will talk about how food grows, discuss Harvest festival and how it is kind to share what we have with others, read stories about food, such as ‘The Enormous Turnip’ and ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’, look at cookery books and make an apple pie, play with the food in our shop, weighing goods and paying with money.
  • Autumn: We will look at the changing seasons, and talk about the dark nights,                         leaves changing colour and falling from the trees and animals which hibernate, have an interest table of conkers, leaves, twigs etc., collect leaves and use them for printing, make bonfire cakes.
  • Dinosaurs: We will talk about different types of dinosaurs – their size, what they ate, how fast they moved, where they lived, read dinosaur stories and rhymes, make a model dinosaur island and play with our model dinosaurs on it.
  • Nativity and Christmas: We will read the nativity story and act it out, sing Christmas songs and accompany them with musical instruments and learn songs for our Christmas play.

If you can contribute any resources that we could use in our role play areas we would be very grateful.  Also if any parent/grandparent/friend would be interested in coming in to nursery to help out we would love to have them!  Please ask for further information.

All the children will participate in PE sessions in the school hall once a week on a Friday, and beginning this week (Sept 18th).  The children only change their footwear, and most parents find it easier for their child to keep (named) P.E. pumps in a bag on their peg rather than try to remember them each week, although of course you can do this if you prefer.

On Mondays the children can borrow a NURSERY LIBRARY book.  Please can these be returned on Friday if possible, or the following Monday at the latest so that your child can choose another book.  If books are lost or damaged we ask you to replace the book or pay a £5.00 replacement charge.

Thank you for bringing in your child’s SNACK MONEY every Monday morning (£1 per week).  Every day we have milk or water to drink plus fruit and a healthy snack that we have bought.  We do encourage them to try foods especially if they have not tried them before, but if there is anything your child does not like or has an allergy to please let us know.

Until half term we are running until 12.00 to see if parents would like our sessions to be 3 hours long.  You will be consulted at the end of this period to see if you wish this to be a permanent arrangement and we would be grateful for your thoughts on this.  IF YOU CANNOT COLLECT YOUR CHILD yourself at 12.00, please let us know in advance who will be coming.  If we do not know them please introduce them to us beforehand as we cannot send your child home with someone we don’t know.

Many thanks,
